The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has raised concerns about the worsening electricity challenges that continue to disrupt polytechnic campuses and surrounding areas across Nigeria. Persistent power outages and prolonged blackouts have significantly hindered academic activities and adversely affected students’ welfare.

In a statement to journalists, NAPS President Oyewumi Ayomide warned that the union might resort to peaceful mass protests if the situation remains unresolved. He attributed the recurring power issues to the inefficiency of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), holding it accountable for the unreliable electricity supply to campuses. 

Criticizing the company's leadership for not meeting expectations, NAPS issued an ultimatum demanding the resignation of TCN Managing Director Abdulazeez Sule by May 1. Failure to address these concerns could result in "unprecedented mass action" targeting TCN offices nationwide.

While emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding students' welfare, NAPS clarified that its planned actions aim to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s education system. The group reassured the public that all protests would be peaceful, responsible, and aligned with the rule of law. Ayomide stressed the necessity of stable electricity for educational progress, stating that reliable energy supply is vital for the productivity of students, teachers, and staff.

NAPS further highlighted that the ongoing electricity crisis is not merely an energy issue but a matter of national importance. It called for prompt intervention by relevant authorities to prioritize the restoration of stable power to educational institutions. The association also expressed its readiness to engage in constructive dialogue with TCN, advocating for cooperative efforts to resolve the crisis.

Ayomide reiterated the association's determination to advance education and protect the future of polytechnic students in Nigeria. The group urged stakeholders to act swiftly, recognizing the critical need for reliable electricity to foster academic excellence and drive meaningful development across the nation.
