NPC DEBUNKS FALSE REPORTS ON 2025 CENSUS, URGES PUBLIC TO RELY ON VERIFIED INFORMATION
NPC Debunks False Reports on 2025 Census, Urges Public to Rely on Verified Information
The National Population Commission (NPC) has dismissed claims circulating online that its Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, announced 2025 as the date for Nigeria’s next Population and Housing Census. In a statement, the Commission clarified that no official date has been set and condemned the false reports as attempts to mislead the public and generate online traffic.
The rumors stemmed from comments made by the NPC Chairman during the 30th Anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Abuja. While addressing the critical issue of Nigeria's significant data gaps, which hinder effective policy and health interventions, Hon. Kwarra expressed hope that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu might issue a proclamation for the census in 2024. However, he did not specify a timeline or make any formal announcement regarding the date.
The NPC reiterated that setting the date for the census is the exclusive responsibility of the President, who must issue an official proclamation. The Commission has been working closely with the presidency to determine a suitable timeline following the postponement of the exercise by the previous administration. Preparations for the census are ongoing as the NPC remains focused on ensuring the success of the vital national exercise.
The Commission urged Nigerians to seek accurate updates only from its official channels and avoid relying on unverified information. It also appealed to the media and the public to verify reports before sharing them, warning that the spread of false narratives could create unnecessary confusion.
For reliable updates on the upcoming census, the NPC advised visiting its official website and following its verified social media platforms.
