NIGERIA LIFTS FIVE-YEAR MINING BAN IN ZAMFARA, EYES ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION

Nigeria has lifted a five-year ban on mining exploration in Zamfara State, citing improved security conditions. The ban, imposed in 2019 following rampant bandit attacks, had halted activities in a region rich in gold, lithium, and copper deposits.

Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals, announced the decision in a statement on Sunday, noting that enhanced security measures have significantly reduced insecurity in the state. "The security operatives' giant strides have led to a notable reduction in the level of insecurity, and with the ban on exploration lifted, Zamfara’s mining sector can gradually begin contributing to the nation’s revenue pool," Alake stated.

During the suspension, illegal miners exploited the state’s mineral resources, further complicating efforts to regulate the sector. With the ban lifted, the government is implementing reforms aimed at revitalizing the mining industry, which currently contributes less than 1% to the country’s GDP.

These reforms include revoking unused mining licenses, offering investors a 75% stake in a new national mining company, reducing exports of unprocessed minerals, and enforcing stricter rules against illegal mining. The government hopes these measures will attract foreign and local investment, creating a foundation for economic diversification away from oil dependence.

In a bid to build capacity in the sector, Nigeria recently signed a training and development agreement with France. Similar partnerships have been established with Germany and Australia, aimed at securing technical, financial, and capacity-building assistance. "We need all the support we can get, including technical, financial, and capacity-building assistance from abroad," Alake emphasized.

The lifting of the ban is expected to unlock the economic potential of Zamfara’s vast mineral resources while addressing the long-standing issue of illegal mining. The move signals Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging its untapped mineral wealth to drive growth and diversify its economy.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
