EFCC SECURES LANDMARK FORFEITURE OF ABUJA ESTATE LINKED TO EX-CBN GOVERNOR GODWIN EMEFIELE
In a historic ruling, Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie on December 2, 2024, ordered the final forfeiture of a sprawling estate in Abuja to the federal government. The property, located on Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, spans 150,500 square meters and comprises 753 duplexes and apartments. This marks the largest single asset recovery ever achieved by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since its establishment in 2003.
The estate is said to belong to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, who is under investigation by the EFCC for alleged financial crimes. Justice Onwuegbuzie ruled that Emefiele failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify ownership of the property, which was reasonably suspected to have been built with proceeds of unlawful activities. The ruling was secured under Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act and Section 44(2)(B) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
The process leading to the final forfeiture began with an interim order issued by the same court on November 1, 2024. EFCC investigations revealed that the estate was fraudulently acquired and constructed during Emefiele's tenure as CBN Governor. The forfeiture aligns with the EFCC’s strategy to strip corrupt individuals of their illicitly acquired assets as part of its anti-corruption mandate.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has consistently emphasized asset recovery as a critical tool in the fight against corruption. Addressing the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, he highlighted the Commission’s proactive approach, combining investigations with asset tracing to prevent suspects from using their ill-gotten wealth to evade justice.
The EFCC’s Establishment Act provides a robust framework for the recovery of assets tied to economic and financial crimes. It empowers the Commission to trace, seize, and secure the forfeiture of properties acquired through corrupt practices. This latest ruling underscores the EFCC’s commitment to dismantling financial crime networks and recovering public assets.
The forfeiture represents a major victory in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption and reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to upholding transparency and accountability. By depriving corrupt individuals of the proceeds of their crimes, the EFCC continues to set a strong precedent in the fight against financial malfeasance.
