The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government, urging it to conduct a comprehensive investigation into Nigerian universities and Vice Chancellors accused of mismanaging funds allocated through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).

These funds, which are meant to ease the financial burden on students and enhance access to higher education, have reportedly been misused by some institutions. The group has called for the public disclosure of the identities of such universities and their leadership, alongside appropriate sanctions for those found guilty of misconduct.

In a statement released by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, CONUA expressed grave concern over allegations that some institutions denied receiving funds allocated to them for their students. Even more troubling are reports that certain universities deposited these funds in interest-yielding bank accounts, a blatant violation of the regulations governing the fund. According to CONUA, such fraudulent actions not only undermine the credibility of a scheme designed to promote equitable education but also jeopardize the futures of countless students and their families who depend on this financial relief.

The union lamented that these actions represent a betrayal of trust and a deliberate attempt to sabotage a noble initiative aimed at improving educational opportunities for all Nigerians.

While acknowledging the Federal Government's efforts to promote equity and access in education, CONUA criticized the apparent lack of decisive action against those accused of wrongdoing. The group emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, arguing that failure to address these allegations would send the wrong message about the government's commitment to educational reform.

To address the issue, CONUA has proposed an independent probe into all implicated institutions and individuals. The group has called on anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take up the matter, ensuring that those found culpable—whether institutions or individuals—are held accountable. CONUA also recommended the establishment of robust oversight mechanisms, including monitoring teams comprising relevant stakeholders within the education system.

These teams would be tasked with tracking the disbursement and utilization of student loans across various universities to prevent future misconduct.

Furthermore, the union stressed the importance of educating students about their rights under the loan scheme, empowering them to resist any form of financial extortion by their schools. Dr. Sunmonu pointed out that ethical reorientation is crucial to fostering transparency and accountability within university leadership. He expressed dismay that such unethical practices are occurring within institutions that are supposed to uphold the highest standards of integrity and moral leadership.

The union's statement also highlighted the broader implications of these allegations for national development. It argued that impunity, if left unchecked, continues to undermine Nigeria's progress. By exposing and punishing wrongdoing, the government can deter future misconduct and rebuild public trust in its institutions. CONUA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity, equity, and justice within Nigeria's public university system, contending that these principles are essential for achieving true national prosperity.

Dr. Sunmonu concluded by pledging CONUA’s unwavering dedication to the pursuit of reforms that prioritize the interests of students and the overall development of the education sector. He called on all stakeholders, including university administrators, government officials, and civil society organizations, to collaborate in ensuring that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund achieves its intended purpose of improving access to quality education for all.

Through collective action and vigilance, CONUA believes it is possible to create an educational system that truly serves as a catalyst for national growth and prosperity.
